Dr. Conrad Murray Sentenced to 4 Years

This morning Dr. Conrad Murray was sentenced to 4 years in prison. Mr. Murray was convicted of Manslaughter for the death of Michael Jackson. Many assume that Dr. Murray may only serve 2 months in Los Angeles (or elsewhere) because of overcrowding in the jails, and prisons.

My heart goes out the the Jackson family, friends, and fans. My heart also goes out to the family, and former patients of Dr. Murray. It has truly been a roller coaster ride for all concerned.

Even though I do not condone Dr. Murray's actions I am wondering though, if any of the other doctors, nurses, physician assistants, pharmacists, their assistants, and even the pharmaceutical company(s) et.al. will be charged with any crimes? It seems that Dr. Murray truly wasn't the only one responsible for Michael Jackson's death.

My Son's Design: Bandana Print Embellished Dockers Work Shirt

For the past few months I've neglected to post these pictures of a work shirt that I modified for my son. He was the designer, and not surprisingly a lot of help with the actual modification. The modifications included adding bandana print to the color, and the breast pocket flaps. Here he is modelling the shirt, and of course he is also wearing the bandana print cap that I found for him.

I have no idea what happened to this picture. Do any of you much more graphics savvy views have any idea? Is there anyway to correct it, other than cropping, and lining it up correctly?

Dr. Conrad Murray Found Guilty of Involuntary Manslaughter of Michael Jackson

The verdict was just announced a few minutes ago. Dr. Conrad Murray has been convicted of Involuntary Manslaughter for the death of Michael Jackson.

It's a bittersweet day for many involved. My greatest concern is for all family members, and friends involved in this case maintain strength and faith regardless of their personal opinion of this guilty verdict of Involuntary Manslaughter.

RIP Michael Joseph Jackson, we want you back, and know that will not happen but will enjoy your musical, and dancing talent until the end of time.

Sewing Students from the Boys and Girls Club of Venice CA (Sew What sewing club) at the 2011 American Sewing Guild Annual Convention Fashion Show. The convention was held August 2011 at the lovely Bona Venture Hotel located in downtown Los Angeles CA.

The fabrics, and notions for the garments, and accessories that the students designed and made came a variety of places: our stash, Joanns Fabrics,Lincoln Fabrics, and Fabric Planet.

All of the students made their own garments.

Somone in her beautiful black silk blouse, and the clutch she designed, and made!!! The clutch is made of the same silk as the blouse, embellished with silk 3-dimensional roses. That silk rose fabric is to die for, and was purchased at Lincoln Fabrics located in Venice CA!!!

Ivette in her beautiful black rayon with red flower print dress. The messenger bag she is carrying she designed, made, designed and embellished a Hello Kitty motif made of leather.

All of us sewing instructors and mentors were so very proud of our students. The students did an excellent job with their creations. Two of the students have received scholarships to attend the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM) located in downtown Los Angeles. I have no doubt that someday soon we will see creations of their's on the Paris, Milan, and New York Runways in the years to come.

Lately I have been a little busy knitting.

I'm a little rusty, but in these past few years I have gotten better.

This particular sweater pattern has short raglan sleeves, and in a solid color.

For this particular sweater I decided to vary it by

adding stripes on the bodice and on the sleeves.

Here's another - same pattern as above, but done in a different yarn.

I love this yarn because it has so many colors.

While going through the computer folders of pictures I came across this one.

It's one of my favorites from a few years ago of my son and his son CJ, Jr.

It seems to be that they are having a very intense and intelligent conversation,

which doesn't surprise me because they both have what it takes.

Volunteering as a Sewing Instructor

For the past few months I have been volunteering at a local Boys and Girls Club - teaching sewing, and I am truly enjoying providing instruction to them, and they are so interested in sewing and making useful items for themselves and as gifts.

Here are a couple of students starting on their individual quilts. They were very excited to learn how to make a quilt. We mostly work from donated fabrics, supplies, and equipment - because our resources are limited. If you have any items that these young people can utilize to hone their skills in sewing, please contact me. They are in need of fabrics, patterns, thread, sewing machines, and notions. books, and DVDs. Basically - any and everything that relates to sewing.

Here are a few pictures of a dress for my grand daughter. She loves the dress and receives many compliments on it, and even a couple of custom orders for dresses. Of course with a hem like that I had to have her twirl a little bit. Initially she saw the fabric while I was making a top for me and she said, "mmm...I'd like a dress out of that material". So...I pretended not to pay attention and surprised her with the dress.

The fabric is a polyester jersey, and for the life of me I can't remember wehre I bought it online and I got it a a very good price - as I recall I purchased 5 yards because I like the design of the fabric. I used a New Look pattern that is at least a few years old. I used a size 10, but used 1/4 inch seam allowances to allow for a larger size. Hopefully the pattern is not out of print because she likes the style and wants another dress made with a different color scheme and design.

UPDATE!!!

Whew...it take take me a while to get back here, please forgive my neglect.

For Valentines'
Day I knit a shrug for my dear daughter, and she loves it. It's a crimson color, and I must say, I like the color myself.

I'd like to make a couple more shrugs from this pattern it is comfy (now you know I tried it on while I was knitting it. One additional thing I have learned from knitting: check the website of the publiser of the pattern because many times there are corrections to the pattern.

Not much going on here.

I did make a blouse (knit top really), a few months ago, but don't recall posting pictures. Nope, I didn't even look back at the posts, LOL.

I also started a dress for my granddaughter and have it all sewn together but am having issues with the neckline and hem. When I was sewing the top I mention above I had the green print fabric out and she said, "Hmmm, I'd like ot have a dress out of this". Not hinting, just admiring the fabric. We do seem to have very similar tastes in fabric designs and prints.

Ok...back to the subject at hand - the dress for her: First of all it's a poly-jersey - a funky geometric print. The colors are lime green, kelly green, and black on a white background. So...if I self face it, the colors will show through the white, if I use white jersey for a "collar", it will get dirty and show that ring around the collor. If I use black jersey it will just look too morbid for me. Afterall she's 10 years old. Decisions...decisions.

Anyone else have problems making decisions like this? I did look for green to match (either shade that would match), but noooo...no such color green in poly jersey. I of course I found cotton jersey, but anything other than white will fade. I don't like one part of a garment faded and the other part(s) retaining their color. So that's my story and I'm stickign to it.

I did also cut out a top for me the same pattern as the top I finished months ago, but in this green, black, and white fabric I mention above. Maybe this week or weekend I can have them both finished ready to present to the world, LOL.

What brought these questions to mind was CBS Sunday Morning, just today. The feature talked aobut proscrastination, particularly filing your Income Tax Return.

So...what have I been sewing? What are some of my new projects?

Not much in the last few weeks. A few weeks I did manage to sew a knit top that I like and have worn a few times. Lots of polka dots and I've received numerous compliments on it. Two of my grandchildren were impressed that I had copied the pattern onto pattern paper, made pattern alterations, and completely sewn it together while babysitting them one Saturday afternoon. This is something I need to continue. I aspire to get more accomplished much like many of you out there, namely Trini Love of Life Happens to be Positive, Erica Bunker, and Carolyn. These are only three of many fantastic seamstresses out there.

Fondling fabric, cutting out patterns, and imagining this made up in that, or that made up in this, is all I have been doing lately, LOL. Decisions, decisions, decisions. JUST DO IT!!! Anyone else have those undecided moments? Gosh, what a dilemma!!! It's par for the course. Very rarely do I seem to shop for a specific pattern or fabric in order to sew up a particular garment. Why is that? Well...we shop and shop and shop, buying the fabrics and patterns that catch our eye. We will get these things sewn up one day...take your time because the "just right" combination has to be made up in our minds before we put that fabric under the presser foot!!!

Some months ago I came across a website that demonstrated how to convert a man's T-shirt into a woman's T-Shirt. There were very detailed instructions, and you virtually take the T-shirt apart and remake the t-shirt for a custom fit. A few weeks ago I found a nice sale on men's T-Shirts and bought a few, but surely don't care for the boxy fit.

If any of you know of this site or have a TNT (Tried and True) method of altering T-Shirts to fit women, please let us know with a post here on the blog.

After attending the Quilting and Crafts Show at the Pomona Fairplex, and other venues such as this I become more hyped and my creative juices start flowing even more. I assisted Pat and Jeannette man (womaned???) the ASG (American Sewing Guild) table and enjoyed my time there. Jeannette Swanson our President of the Los Angeles Chapter brought some of her creations she's decorated with paint sticks. They were priceless. Most of the visitors to the table received a demostration in from Jeanette, and I'm sure she has sparked a lot of interest. The sign up sheets for receiving more information about ASG were pretty hefty. If not yet, soon there will be even more members and participants in our meetings and seminars. That alone is exciting.

BTW, Jeannette teaches conducts classes in sewing and other crafts for the Santa Clarita Parks and Recreation Department.

It was a joy to see all of the vendors and well as visitors mingling and shopping. There are so many new innovations in the market it's unbelievable. Of course, I did a little shopping after seeing a couple of things that were irresistible. Naturally, that was fabric and patterns. We crafts people need our own stimulus package. Just imagine what damage we could to do our wallets with a personal stimulus package, I already have my wish list handy!!!

A shopper with Marsha McClintock of Saf-T-Pockets Patterns (www.saf-t-pockets.com). I was reluctant to take her class because I was thinking "What's the big deal? It's just pockets?" Well, I could have never been more wrong. It ain't just about pockets - let me tell you. Yes, the pockets are fascinating...she hides pockets in other pockets, and in many other places in the garments she's designed. She has designed many great patterns for travelers, shoppers, and all of us everyday people. Many pockets to place all your valuables and that Pick Pocket would have a terrible time getting anything from you!!!

This little lady's designs are fierce - in a very good way. It'd be nice if you completely see the outfit she's wearing. Of course she designed and made it herself - including the buttons!!!

She has excellent methods to embellish garments, and fabrics, and she can even show you how to make your own fabric. "Not me" you say? Yes, YOU!!!

The fabrics she carries are top-of-the-line at very good prices. Bamboo fabric...try it. It's softer than cashmere and last much longer. Her linens are not the type that we are familiar with..they are much better and wrinkle less than we're used to. Imagine that!!

It has taken me a while to post this because my computer crashed. That's always fun isn't it?

First I must express my gratitude to Peggy Sagers an American Sewing Guild (ASG) member, the owner, creator, and designer of Silhoutte Patterns for putting this wonderful affair together.

I also must thank the San Pedro California, Double Tree Hotel for keeping the restrooms clean and well stocked. No lines, which is very important to any female. The accomodations were also very nice and the food was tasty. Free parking? YES!!!

And this is in California!!! The only free parking in California is at the mall or your own house!!!

I must also thank the husbands, friends and other family members of the artists who assisted and "manned" the vendor area for their unique artist. You must know how valuable you are to all of us.

So..here we go: I thoroughly enjoyed Education of the Textile Arts in California (ETACalifornia) and attending the classes and seminars. All of the artists and seamstresses were tip top and are so talented. I have a lot of respect for all of them. If you ever have the opportunity to see any of these artists in whatever venue please do not hesistate. You will have the best time and you deserve that, right? Yes, me!!! I am going to Education of the Textile Arts in California. It's been held about 20 miles from me in San Pedro, CA. I am so doggone excited!!! The hostess of the event (Paggy Sagers of Silhouette Patterns) even called me one night last week!!! I had a couple of questions and she called to answer them. Very nice lady, too. I hope to see her in person and get a picture of the two of us. Whatever pictures I am able to take I will surely post soon after the event.

I've signed up for several classes and will be spending all day Saturday and all day Sunday. Thank God that my flex day is that Monday - so I can rest and marvel my experiences and new information I will receive. I am about to burst!!!

I am trying so hard to resist buying this machine, but it ain't easy!!! It's a very nice machine and I even went to the Singer Sewing Machine website and read a few of the portions of the manual. It seems to be a wonderful machine and the reviews are quite favorable. When I find it at a good price then it's mine!!! I will keep you posted with my progress.

Well the outfit didn't get finished yet because when my granddaughter put it on it was so big. Not so much the top, but the pants work enormous. Besides that I don't think she was so enthused about the outfit either. Other than the color I don't think she liked it at all. So, my thinking since then I will finish the out fit and then make another with the adjustments necessary. I will probably also use a different pattern for the top because she doesn't like her stomach showing - at all, and since the top is a flared top it definitely will show a little stomach as she moves.

I got so motivated I started on this outfit for my granddaughter who is 9 years old.

The outfit is in hot pink cotton/spandex...just a little bit of spandex so it should be comfy for her. The cotton is a little heavier than I think is necessary for a sleeveless top, but if she chooses to wear it in the colder months she can wear a turtle neck underneath. The fabric came from I believe Walmart a year or so ago. It was an excellent purchase - only $1.00 per yard. I think I ended up with 11 yards by simply purchasing whatever was left on the bolt.

I zig-zagged all seam allowances before I sewed together. For some reason I could not find my foot control for either of my sergers. I have 2 old sergers: Juki 2/4 and a White 234. Where in the heck could the foot controls be? One of the surgers was in a case so the foot control should have been right there with it. Did they just walk away? The bad thing is that I can't use any other foot controls because of the connection plug on the cord doesn't match anything else I've got. This holds true for both machines. Grrrrr!!!

On the sewing machine, a Singer Quantum I decided to use variegated thread in the top to "embroider" little flowers along the hem of the pants and along the bottom of the top. I haven't put the bias on the armholes or neckline yet, because I can't decide if I want to do that or put a self-fabric facing on it, with the same embroidery. Any suggestions?

This picture below also shows how I ran out of bobbie thread before I was finished with the embroidery. I hate that, LOL.

I did a bad thing in making this outfit: I don't even know if it will fit her. In rtw she's a size 10-12. The pattern size I used is 8, but used about 1/2 " seam vs. the usual 5/8". I wanted to take her measurements today, but they were out all day. So...when I get a chance to have her try on the outfit, I will surely take pictures and post them.

Well, here we go, as promised. The curtain panel is showing up more orangey than it really is. It's still a beautiful cotton fabric from Joann's.

My daughter loved it when she saw it after she got home from her trip.

View from the back and on the right of the actual curtain is the black-out fabric. I chose the less dense because I'm sure she'd want some light to come in even though there is a south-facing window on a wall next to the west-facing door.

I love this machine - even though it's an older model it works perfectly.

Here are the potholders. I like them myself, I must say. My daughter said they were too pretty to use.One of the illustrous potholders. I chose a decorative stitch for the quilting portion on one of the potholders, and tried to repeat her first initial on the other one. I've learned to use a rayon thread for the actual decorative stitches and monogramming.

In particular there is a Fabric Covered Photo Album Class(es), also classes in making Tote Bags, Intro to Sewing, Basic Sewing, and Sewing Machine Tune-Up and Maintenance. Sewing and Craft Instruction

Last week I met with the Supervisor of Cultural Programs for the city where I live. We met to discuss the possibility of me becoming an instructor of sewing and other crafts to be held at various Parks and Recreation Centers locations within the city. She was very enthused when she saw some of my "samples" - various items that I have sewn and and some that I have knit. I was very proud of the garments I took to the meeting. She recognized my good craftsmanship in the items I displayed as she was familiar with sewn garments because her mother used to make most of the clothes that she and her sister wore while growing up.

We also discussed conducting one-day classes, and classes where there would be a series of sessions. I like both ideas very much because I have a lot of different subject matter that I could teach students who enroll in the classes. It seems that they have been looking for someone to teaching for a long time, and have no instructors willing or available, but citizens of the community have shown interest in wanting to learn to sew.

To start - I'd like to hold a Basic Introductory Sewing Class - where students would learn about fabrics, patterns, including how to determine the correct size pattern to purchase according to their body type and measurement. They would also learn the proper use of a few of the sewing supplies and notions available on the market.

The next idea would be a Basic Quilting Class - making a very basic quilt out of 9 or 12 squares (or rectangles) of 2 coordinating (or not coordinating) fabrics and a solid coordinating color for the backing. (My grand daughter doesn't know it yet, but I have 2 fabrics that we can use to teach her how to sew and she would have a nice quilt in her favorite colors.

Another class would be "Sewing with a Purpose" (SWAP) for a Spring and Summer wardrobe. The SWAP consists of usually at least 8 - 12 or more different garments that are interchangeable and coordinated. With that in mind one could have a wardrobe that would consist of 40 or more outfits. The garments to be made would at least be:

2 Jackets
3 pair of slacks pants (yes, there is a difference)
and possibly a pair or two of shorts
3 skirts
3 tops

With the fabric that is not used for the above garments you could probably get 2 or4 nice tote bags or purses, and a scarf or 2 - just to add to a little something to the wardrobe. Timmel Fabrics: www.timmelfabrics.com (NAYY)hosts SWAPs every year and the garments that participants create are quite extraordinary.

I will definitely keep you posted, so check back often to see the progress. I will also definitely take pictures of the students progress with their project(s) and post the pictures here.

While all this planning is going on and syllabus after syllabus is being prepared I am still waiting to get my hands on my birth certificate so that I can get going with teaching at Michaels Craft Store.

Here's a scarf with matching beret that I made for my grandson (my daughter's son) Dominque. He played football for the past 2 years for the Baldwin Hills Bruins, and these are the team colors - the same as UCLA teams. By the way - he's a very good football player, and I love watching him play.

Close up of the scarf. I wanted to make a striped pattern, and this is what I came up with. Just off the top of my head and for some reason I like the brick pattern, I've made many scarves and headwear in this pattern.

The Saga Continues, LOL

This is a scarf and beret that I made for my daughter. During the Labor Day Holiday I found out that her favorite color is crimson, cranberry, maroon or blood red. Whatever you want to call it. I had made a beret and scarf for my brother Maurice, but he doesn't like caps because they make him itch. I didn't think to mention that it wasn't made of wool. Anyway...my daughter kind of jumped right and said, "I'll take it, it's my favorite color". So...I had to make another scarf so that she'd have the matching ensemble. If you new my family you'd spoil them, too.

In the process of taking pictures of the scarf and beret I asked my daughter's daughter (my dear one and only grand daughter) to model the garments for me. She was more than happy to oblige. She's quite the model, too.

So...I couldn't resist buying this: Vogue Knitting Winter 2007/2008 Issue. Beautiful knits, beautiful stitches....extremely beautiful yarns used in their displayed garments.

I like this one very much...it would be a challenge, and with long sleeves - but who doesn't need a challenge?

My daughter would love this one, and how about in an eyelash "mink" or erman-look eyelash or mohair yarn?

Here's a wonderful quilt book that I saw on another blog. The blog owner is quite a quilt maker - she makes the most beautiful quilts and uses many patterns, I think in the past year or so she has made 15 - 20 quilts. she's such an inspiration. I like predominately black quilt shown here , but you all know I love orange and purple - so I think that would be nice. A quilt for a baby in beautiful soft, muted colors would be beautiful, too. There are so many possibilities.

It would be much better not to purchase any fabric for this quilt if I decide (better yet -find the time to sew it) because I know I have more than enough fabrics already to made probably 3 or 4 quilts from any pattern. Better yet, it would be better to use this book and quilt pattern for one of my classes, and kill 2 birds with 1 stone!

Well, my new sewing machine was delivered today. I feel the pressure---yeah woman...this blog is about sewing, blahblahblah...Ok...so I will sew something this weekend even if its only something with the decorator stitches, ok? I do have a few hems I could do...particularly jeans...yeah - that's it...I will hem those jeans. that will definitely put the machine to the test, after all it's supposed to be heavy duty!!!

I do also realize that I have to pose some of the things I've already made through the years...I will have to dig through the closets and see what I can find. I really miss sewing. In an apartment I used to live in I converted my daughter's bedroom into a sewing and computer room. I also had my TV so it was extremely convenient. I didn't have to leave the room to do anything besides potty, eat or go to bed!!! I loved it.

...on my way to a friend's house then to brunch at the Odyessy...well, I've never been much for street names, just landmarks. I drive past the exit and I'm am truly on my way to Sacramento. "Hmmmm"...I say to myself...what have you done now? So, if it weren't for my cell phone - I may very well be in Sacramento right now.

She's movie buff and I we watched a movie on DVD - Notes on a Scandal. Very nice movie - with a couple of twists that took me by surprise.

In between taking a break and talking out on her patio, playing with her dogs and sipping wine - I took a few pictures of her and her dogs. She has 3 and they are the sweetest things. I believe they are all mutts but so lovable.

Here's Shadow. You can't see how handsome he is or how big. He's mixed with something - my guess is Lab and Great Dane, only because I love Great Danes.

Greta is a Yellow Lab, and the sweeest thing. She was in training to be a guide dog, but couldn't cut the mustard. She's pretty much a loner, but she definitely lets you know when the other 2 are getting too much affection.
Pugsley is the newest addition to the family and a very spoiled brat. Loveable and so soft...he made sure I gave him plenty of affection.

I just purchased a new sewing machine. How did it catch my eye? I was going through the cable guide and saw the word "sewing", so you know exactly what I did!!! ..."press select" on the remote control. The new machine is a heavy duty model made my Singer.

So, hopefully there will be no more (or just less) excuses for not getting something made up on that machine. It's being shipped and I didn't think to ask when was the shipping date or when I could expect delivery. I will make room for it by the end of the weekend.

As I drive by yard sales I always have tunnel vision for sewing machines. Sometimes you can get one for almost nothing. A lot of people own machines and don't have a clue about how to use it, or what to use it for other than simple rips in a seam.

I have many other machines - most of them given to me by friends who don't sew anymore or never could and had a machine that they knew they were not going to use. Most need repair and when I get that accomplished I will give them someone who could really use it or to a shelter for their use.

I was sitting with 2 of my grandchildren this evening. Arianna, my only granddaughter who happens to be 8 years old, going on 88 - I asked her if she want to learn to sew. She said, "No, I might stick my finger or something". Well, have no fear my sweet darlin' cause Grannie will teach you safety precautions. I didn't bother to let her know that getting stuck with a needle or a pin occasionally is part of the job of sewing. Rest assured that I will make sure she enjoys sewing and learns all the essentials.

She's creative so she will have a lot of fun designing and whipping up something for herself or her dolls, or even her mother and brother. I have needed a sewing buddy for a long time, and I am sure she will fit the bill. Then again, who am I going to leave all my sewing stuff to? She's also a beautiful young lady, smart as a whip, and would be the perfect model for cute little outfits for someone of her age. She's a bit of a clothes horse already, so she really does need to know how to sew, if only to make her own alternations and embellishments.

I may start her off with hand sewing by embellishing a tote bag with various trims and buttons or studs. She's done one before - Santa brought her a kit with beads and studs and she did decorate a pink nylon tote bag for her mother. I have 10 or so more of those bags, and plenty coordinating trim, ribbons, etc. to get her started and inspired. Heck, I'm inspired myself!!! I'd better get those UFOs out and make sure I've got everything I need to complete them.

A Better World

Let's not let dreams and hope die. We should strive to be better people and open our hearts and arms to others who are difference from use. We'd be surprised at what positive things we will learn.

My plan is to go have blood drawn for my routine tests for cholesterol, etc. Then I will call my daughter to see if she and her 2 children would like to join me for the Martin Luther King Day Parade. The Parade is held on Martin Luther King Boulevard in the Crenshaw District of Los Angeles. The parade will conclude in the Crenshaw District's Leimert Park.

While looking in knitting books for different patterns, textures and new ideas. textures - this book fit the bill. Here are just 2 of the particular sweaters that I like. What color(s) do you think would work best? Of course I already have have yarn in all the basic colors,but I want a dazzling color, even though I think the design would make any color dazzle,and I need an excuse to buy more yarn. Have you ever felt any as soft as cashmere and as smooth as silk? This is new to me and the first time I felt Bamboo yarn...I was amazed. I was in Michael's Craft Store and other customers were close by and I just had to go over to them and say, "Feel this, isn't it wonderful?" It's the softest, smoothest thing I have ever felt. I found this company that has clothing. Just imagine how good and comfy you will feel wearing something made of bamboo fibers. I don't think it gets any better!!!

Sunday afternoon I met with the Events Coordinator for the retail store where I applied for a job as Instructor of sewing, knitting, and whatever other crafts they may be a demand for. I took "samples" of my knitting, sewing and some of the bath salts I made. She was very impressed and I felt very proud.

We had a nice interview and I completed a survey that was based on one's honesty, ethics and integrity, etc., etc. The answers multiple choice from one to 10, with 10 being the most agreeable, and 1 being the least agreeable to the statements presented. Most of my answers were with 2, 3, 8 or 9. I honestly answered according to the way I feel. Even though there was not supposed to be much thought, I do have deductive reasoning and realize that there is not an absolute answer for any of the statements. Any whooo...they are doing a background check...because I will be teaching children in these different crafts and they want to make sure the children are safe with me. As long as they don't whine (LOL) they are safe with me!!!

So, for one of the first classes (if they can get me scheduled soon enough) would be candy for Valentine's Day, Fabric Covered Photo Albums, and maybe even a gift basket. How does that sound? Would you be interested and sign up? Of course you would!!!

One of the best things about it is that the students get a discount for the supplies they buy at the store. I'm sure that is a nice incentive for anyone to sign up for a class, it definitely would be for me.

Before and since the interview I had been working on a curriculum and syllabus. That's not an easy task because I need to gauge how much time it will take for each demonstration and take into consideration the number of students in the class and their knowledge of the subject matter.

I also took time to design a flier or two, biz cards and labels for one of the crafts.

While I was there I met a lady who also sews, crochets and knits. She saw the items that I took to my interview and like them, a lot. She asked if I would like to share a booth with her at some sort of exhibit later this month. That was exciting in itself, and would give me a lot of pleasure and provide a lot of exposure and hopefully get a lot of students signed up for classes.

Yesterday I received a voice mail from a young lady at the retail store where I applied for an "instructor" position. I returned her call today and made arrangements to meet with her tomorrow afternoon. She asked that I bring samples of my work - knitting, sewing, whatever. So I think I will gather a few pieces of jewelry, the hats and scarves shown below (sans the grey heather - its in the mail), and trek on over with my wares. She gave me the impression that they are desperate for instructors of all sorts. After years of not having the confidence I believe it takes to teach a class and stand in front of total strangers - class after class...I feel that I can definitely do that and more. I will knock their socks off. I may even take a class or two. I never could paint, so that would be a good one for me to take.

Have any of you ever taken any sort of crafts classes or wanted to take one and just haven't gotten around to it? What are you interested in learning, and why haven't you taken the classes yet? If you took a class what did you like most about it? What did you like least? Did you learn what you thought you'd need to learn? Do you still use those skills that you learned?

Teaching Classes

Hopefully within the next few weeks I will be teaching sewing and other crafts at a local craft store. I am very excited about it because I haven't taught in a "structured" multi-pupil environment before. I've only taught one-on-one and usually just tips or a specific technique or two.

I'd like to teach two different types of sewing classes for all levels of skill. One would have to be a series of classes and teach students they way I was taught. I learned about fabrics, threads, machines, patterns, hand stitching and more. The alternative or joint class would be "let's make a skirt today"...basically taking measurements, cutting fabric and sewing it up all in one class session. I don't think a student would learn much from that and may leave the class with the attitude that they can sew anything. I appreciate that kind of confidence, but sewing is an art and a science and I know it's important to learn as much as you can. Heck, I'm still learning.

If you have any experience in teaching sewing please give me all the advice you can. I think I will start out with a craft class initially...maybe making a fabric covered photo album. Something in red with nice little hearts all over it - just in time for Valentine's Day.

There's still the lesson plan(s) and syllabuses to draft and finalize. That has been on the back burner with Christmas and New Years in my face!!! LOL.

Wish me "luck" and good fortune with this endeavor and let me know your thoughts and ideas.

Just a pix of the quilt top. I need to make more blocks for a coverlet or actual quilt for a queen sized bed. I'm sure that I will probably have to take some of these blocks from the quilt top and intermingle with new blocks that I'll make. Tell me what you think.

Fabric Bowls

I saw fabric bowls for the first time on a quilting TV show and loved them.
The artist had made vases, too. That were fabulous. So, I finally decided
to try it after seeing them about 4 years ago. I got nice fabric for a very
good price at Joann's, as well as the stiff interfacing. They turned out
excellent from the beginning. That satin stitch sure uses a lot of thread,
so if you're so inclined to make these - make sure you have 3 or 4 spools
of the color(s) of your choice. Variegated thread would look good, too.

This is one of my first fabric bowls. I've seen many that are absolutely beautiful.
I used this retro print with very vivid colors...notice the orange!!!

This is a quilt blocks for a small quilt I made a little over a year ago. I chose orange because....well...take a guess. The first picture is the "spark" block. A smaller numbe rof blocks are the "spark" block with a brighter fabric in the center than the other blocks.

At this point its only a quilt top made of about 24 squares with about 6 different prints and the solid orange fabric. Here is the link for the pattern: http://www.quiltbus.com/free.htm I do plan on finding the same fabrics (Joann's) and make a Queen size quilt, or at least a decent sized coverlet.

I did enjoy making the quilt top, but had a few problems along the way. First, finding the right fabrics that coordinate well together was not an easy task. I finally sort of gave up and just bought anything that had orange, red-orange, orange-red, orange-yellow, yellow orange...yep..those are real colors. I also had problems with the sizing of the blocks because I didn't realize until it was too late that I was ironing the blocks wrong. One should never use steam or pull on the fabric squares as you are ironing it. That will stretch it out of shape. The blocks are supposed to be 8"x8. Mine are a little larger because of the steam pressing and stretching I probably added 1/2" or 3/4" to the most of the blocks. Some even came out lopsided because of the fabric content - not all of the fabrics are 100% cotton. As I was squaring them off I got concerned because they seemed to be getting smaller and smaller. I went on a board to ask other quilters who have much more experience that I at piecing quilt blocks and ended up frustrated, but determined it make it work one way or another. After all the squaring off it seemed to work well when all was said and done.

I'm sure this pattern is a wonderful to dwindle down your stash or use up your scraps. I'd say you don't have to stick to the same amount of different fabrics to make it work. I'd like to see it done in black and white - possible geometric shapes or illusion fabrics.

I didn't get much sleep last night...hmmm...maybe 4 hours!!! I am too excited about this new blog of mine that I had to get up and post more pics. This grey heather scarf made from Red Heart Super Saver # 0400 (No Dye Lot - I like that).

I generally take my knitting with me to work and knit on the express bus to and from the "park and ride" lot. After a hard and stressful day I saw that the needle had wandered off to places unknown. I suppose it's in "Lost and Found" for METRO!!!

The scarf is for "MyBubbaMan" - one of my dear brothers. He lives in Oakland Calif, and while I was there for Thanksgiving I had made him a Beret from the same yarn. The Beret was a little small so I made another a little larger -yep using that same pattern for the other Berets. I asked him if he wanted a scarf to match - he said, "No, it doesn't get cold enough to wear a scarf"...I said to myself, "Yeah, right...he'll be eating his words". Well, lo and behold after talking to him just a few days after that, I asked if he thought it was cold enough for a scarf. He replied, "H*LL YEAH"....I smiled...he only asked that I make it so that the "holes aren't so big". Gotta love him.

I used a reversible pattern which is a multiple of 4 sts, p1 k3 on each row. You actually purl the first stitch on each row rather than slipping it onto the needle. It makes a nicer edge than usual.

I think it's a classy "quasi-rib"...I'm using it for most of the scarves now. I need to try it on the beret to see how it works with the increases and decreases in the instructions. For some reason it's showing up brownish...maybe I should have taken the pictures in natural light instead at night under a fluorescent light.

Here a couple of slippers I made for my cousin and her husband.
I've had them probably for 2 years (the gold ones anyway), and
made the other dark variegated pair a couple of weeks ago.

They got married after finding each other again after quite a few years.
They eloped and went to Las Vegas and got married on 07/07/07...Isn't
that romantic? He's a well-established artist based out of Chicago,
I really like a lot of his work. Take a look for yourself:

Here's a work in progress - an orange scarf, just a regular garter stitch, because of the texture I didn't think it made sense to complicate the scarf with anything more detail than a garter stitch. It's a gift to a co-worker who loves orange like I do. I am also making a beret like the other above, but haven't gotten close to even starting on it because of the gauge. It's a thicker yard and much fewer stitches per inch so I don't want to make it to fit an elephant. I will have to do a little math to determine how many stitches it will need for the cast on/first row.

OOPS!!! I forgot to include the picture of the slippers that match. This Beret, Scarf and Slippers were the "Natural" Color in Bernat's "Soft Boucle".

Although they look like the others, these have an iridescent "glitter" thoughout, as well as the scarf and beret.

It's rated #5 "Bulky", Size 8 US knitting needles, and 15 sts x 22 rows gives you
a 4"x4" swatch. Not bad for immediate action, right?

Update 01/07/8: Well, here's my update with the instructions for the beret. I had no idea that the clarity would be close to nill when I uploaded the scanned instructions to this post. It's horrible. If you care to have a copy, I will be more than happy to send it if you email me (ladywhosews@gmail.com) so that I can give you my address where you can send a SASE. If you can to you can send me a pattern or two also. I will take the instructions to Office Depot or such, and enlarge it on their copier. My "view" of the scan before I uploaded it was legible. If that doesn't work well I will go on and type it out...wish me luck with that because it is in very small print (figures) and grey vs. black!!!

Here's the pattern for the Beret, which I love because it's done on circular needles. And of course, wouldn't you know it, I forgot the info regarding the guage and needle size(s)...or well...let me see if I can get my hand on it right now...yep here we go:

Bernat Beret Pattern
Cast on 82 sts/ Work 4 rows in (K2, P2 ribbing, inc 3 sts evenly across last row, 85 sts.

Proceed as follows:

1st row: (RS). Knit,
2nd and alt rows: Purl,
3rd row: K1 (M1, K14) 6 times, 91 sts.
5th Row: K1, (m2, k15) 6 times, 97 sts.
7th Row: K1 (M1, k16) 6 times, 103 sts.
Cont in this manner, Inc 6 sts as before on every alt row until there are 115 sts.
Work 4 rows even in stockinet st.

Next row: K1 (K2tog, k17) 6 times, 109 sts.
Next and every alt row: Purl
Next row: K1 (K2tog, k16) 6 times, 103 sts.
Next row: K1,(K2tog, K15) 6 times, 97 sts.

Cont in this manner, dec 6 sts as before on every alt row to 31 sts.
Purl 1 row
Next row: K1 (k2tog, k3) 6 times, 26 sts.

Break yarn leaving a long end. Thread yarn through rem sts. Draw up tightly and fasten securely. Sew back seam. Also, from tips I found on the net you would leave enough to pull through a double strand of your yard. This is to make it more secure.

Note: This pattern is from the label for the I yarn used in the Grey Beret that I made for my brother MyBubbaMan, I don't have a picture of the 2 I made him, but the scarf is pictured above. I left out part of the instructions for mitts whose knitting instructions are also on the label. Also, from tips I found on the net you would leave enough to pull through a double strand of your yard. This is to make it more secure.
